Prehistoric Eras · Final Mesozoic Trail

Cretaceous Period

The final stretch of the Mesozoic trail and home to many of the dinosaurs people recognize most easily today.

About the Cretaceous

The Cretaceous Period lasted from roughly 145 to 66 million years ago. Continents continued moving toward more familiar modern positions while flowering plants spread and dinosaur diversity remained extremely high.

Famous groups from this period include tyrannosaurids, ceratopsians, hadrosaurs, ankylosaurs, spinosaurids, dromaeosaurs, and many others. The period ended with the mass extinction that eliminated all non-avian dinosaurs.

Cretaceous Creatures

Cretaceous

Spinosaurus

Spinosaurus was one of the most unusual giant theropods of the Cretaceous, with a long, narrow skull, a towering sail, shortened hind limbs, and a deep tail. Its fossils strongly connect it with fish-rich aquatic environments, but exactly how it used the water remains debated.

Cretaceous

Suchomimus

The Suchomimius Tenerensis, commonly shortened to Sucho, was a very fast swimmer in the Early Cretaceous period and likely ate mostly fish.

Cretaceous

Triceratops

The Triceratops existed in the Late Cretaceous period in what is now North America and is one of the best-known horned dinosaurs.

Cretaceous

Tyrannosaurus Rex

The Tyrannosaurus Rex is one of the most well-known dinosaurs that have ever existed, if not the most popular.
